SWUUW Board Seeks Nominations

The SWUUW Board is actively recruiting new faces and energies to serve a two-year term on the SWUUW Board beginning March 2010. We need women who represent the Southwest District from Louisiana, southern Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, western Tennessee, and Texas. We 'meet' monthly via telephone conference calls and/or the internet, and we gather a couple times a year in a face-to-face setting. We are in the process of revisioning ourselves and will have a workshop about this at the Feb. 26-28 SWUUW annual conference in Dallas. Please consider nominating yourself or someone you know. Contact Linda VanBlaricom, Nominations Chair and President Elect, lvbuu2@juno.com or  501-309-4858 / 501-309-4858.

SWUUW and ICUUW Agree to Separate
Southwest UU Women (SWUUW) successfully served as the administrative organization behind the International Convocation of UU Women (ICUUW) that took place last year in lieu of the regular SWUUW conference. There was great energy for the ICUUW, which drew over 600 participants nationally and internationally, to continue as an organization beyond the convocation. Following the convocation, the SWUUW Board held a retreat and continued discussion as how best to go forward in its relationship with ICUUW. It was decided that, while SWUUW supports the ICUUW and wants to see its continued success, there was a desire to continue as a district-level organization. SWUUW Administrator, Laura Nagel, who also served as ICUUW Administrator, has chosen to continue in her role as Administrator/Director of ICUUW and has stepped down from her position as SWUUW Administrator. The UU Partner Church Council (UUPCC) agreed to be the sponsor organization for the ICUUW and assumed grant management for the ICUUW.

Re-Visioning SWUUW

The SWUUW Board has been in dicussion as to where and what we would like to see SWUUW be in the future following the great success of SWUUW's work with the International Convocation of UU Women (ICUUW). We met face-to-face on two occasions, in the spring and again in the fall, to discuss, as a board, what our vision and goals are. While we agreed we are all very pleased and excited about the ICUUW, we also are concerned that it diverted focus from what SWUUW has been for women in the district. At our fall meeting, we started a visioning process. Some things the board envisions for the future of SWUUW are:

   - a vibrant conference of 200-400 women

   - 30 SWUUW chapters by 2014

   - enough financial resources to get nationally known speakers

   - annual service / social action events

It was clear to us that the visioning work we did all focused on bringing women together in relationship at the district and cluster level. We would really like to see SWUUW unite women throughout the district and provide them with resources and support. To do this and to see if you share in this vision, we are inviting members to attend a visioning session at the SWUUW Conference in Dallas, Feb 26-28. Linda VanBlaricom, VP/President Elect and Gail Tittle, President will lead this session.

I hope you will join us so that we can be the organization you want us to be for you!
